Organizing Our Lives: The Plan

January 12, 2015

Happy Monday friends!  What an epic weekend for football!  My Hawks kicked some Panther behind on Saturday and Green Bay kept the Cowboys from advancing on Sunday, so Green Bay will be here playing my boys on Sunday at noon.  You can bet we will be at that game.  I’m a little bummed the Broncos lost because I love Peyton Manning, and the Patriots won which I really don’t love, so this should be an interesting weekend in the AFC with the Colts at the Patriots.

There’s no better way to start the new year than with a clean, organized home.  One thing Huebie and I always talk about when it comes to our home is how much space we have, but how much crap we have too.  When we moved in 3 1/2 years ago we had 3 almost completely empty rooms: our living room, one bedroom and our bonus room.  Today, every room in our home is filled to the brim.  I don’t know how it happened but it did, and now we’re wanting to scale back and at least get the clutter under control.  I want us to organize our lives and keep it that way!  There is nothing wrong with “empty space” in a home; not every nook and cranny doesn’t need to be filled with “stuff.”

I decided that we should start going room by room and really focus on only keeping those things we actually use and need.  I know there will be some sentimental things we hold onto (my Christmas Barbie collection for example), but for the most part we have way more “stuff” than we need.

RELATED  An Organized Pantry

The 3 rooms we’ll be focusing on are:

– Bonus/play room

– Office

-Kitchen

Within each of those rooms I have specific areas I want to focus on as well.  I plan to share each room in separate posts as we move through the house.  I know the office and kitchen will take a lot more work than the bonus/play room, so I’m not expecting to have this all done in a week, or even two.  We’re going to go at our own pace and do what we can as we have free time.

We will first tackle the bonus/play room, then move onto the office, and then the kitchen.

We will also go through the other rooms in the house as well (family room, laundry room, bathrooms, guest bedroom, master and Little A’s room), but those rooms don’t need as much love and have stayed pretty organized.

Question of the day: Do you have any areas of your home you want to organize this year?

I’ve been on a HUGE organizing kick lately. I also got a label maker at Christmas so I’ve been labeling everything too. Labeling really DOES make a difference with keeping things in order.

You’ll have to do some before/after pictures *wink*.

Thanks for sharing… have a great day.
    xoxo

After, you can come organize my house 😉

So sad, Cowboys lost, Broncos lost, Baylor lost, Kansas State lost… I mean, really!! At least they all made it to the playoffs?

Jeez, it was a losing weekend for you guys. I was bummed the Broncos lost for sure. Really like Peyton Manning.

Love that you said “and the patriots won which I really dont love…” well this girl is happy 🙂 I love that you are breaking the organizing down by rooms – can’t wait to see how they turn out!! xo, Biana – BlovedBoston

Great plan! For the record – your house didn’t seem at all cluttered 🙂 I love how organized you are though! …and we’re sad the Cowoys lost 🙁 That call 🙁

Well I’m going to be an honorary Seahawks fan because GB beat my Cowboys and I’m from Minneapolis, and the Vikings/GB rivalry is REAL. So I’ll pretend like you didn’t say you were glad they got the game handed to them, I mean won… Worst call ever.

Anyway, this is a great plan! I’m a minimalist, so I’m constantly donating/purging, but I can see how that will get challenging the older Henry gets. Love all organizational plans!

Umm… all of them! 😉 Ha! I started working on cleaning out my office over the weekend. I hate to start, but am so thankful once I just bite the bullet and do it. I think I’ll be going through everybody’s closets next and donating a bunch of clothes!

Figuring out where to start is the hardest part for me. It just feels so overwhelming.
Closet clean outs are some of my favorites. So easy to do and you can really see the difference.

My goal this year is deep cleaning, I’m awful about cleaning baseboards, windows, etc haha- We purged and organized in 2014, felt amazing! Good luck!

I can completely relate to this. We’ve been a lot better the past few months – organizing and purging a lot. I’m proud of the progress we’ve made, but it’s something that needs to happen continuously, because with kids things accumulate so fast!

Can’t wait to see how it goes for you and to get some ideas.

Sounds you have a good game plan in action! I’ve been working on cleaning up stuff around our house for the last six months. I just have the kitchen and office left. I’m ready to be done with it but know it we’ll be getting more since we’re adding a kiddo to the mix 🙂

    GO HAWKS!

I try to organize all of the time, because that’s just how I am. Letting go of stuff you really don’t need is refreshing.I would LOVE to see a photo of your Barbie collection. I have several I LOVE LUCY / LUCILLE BALL Barbies. I have my grandmother’s Marilyn Monroe Barbie and also, I own a really cool BEWITCHED Barbie. I keep them in their boxes. So pretty! I hear ya about football!! My hubby & I watched those games over the wknd too. I am curious to see who will be at the Super Bowl. We are going to watch the other game tonight too. Take pics at the game. Hope to see! Have a great day!

I love getting organized at the start of the new year. It really sets the tone for everything else!

I need to reorganize everything this year! We’re redoing our floors so I’m definitely going to start reorganizing once the floors are done!

I can relate to this post so much! We have more space then it feels like because most of our rooms aren’t the most functional- especially our kitchen. I think that’s going to be our biggest project this year– making it work without doing a remodel- which is definitely going to be a challenge! I can’t wait to see all of your projects!!

I love clearing out! I’ve been trying to do the same with my stuff, I keep having mini clear outs so when I move house in July, it won’t be as dramatic!

    Good luck 🙂

Loooove! I just did this in my house and I’m loving how empty it feels lol. No drawer or closet escaped my wrath. Same with our garage. It was overwhelming at first but now it feels so light and freeing!!

So far I’ve cleaned out my pantry, Charlotte’s closet (clothes not shelves…ha!) and one of my dressers. Other than that, I would love to clean out my closets, my other dresser, and the front room which has become a free for all/sitting room/office space. I know I can do it, it’s just making the time to do it. Ugh.

We’ve been in the process of re-organizing our office/bonus room. I’ve been using cheap bins from the dollar store to contain smaller items. 🙂

I always find the start of a new year is the perfect time to get organised. I am going through the rooms in our house too. Would love to see the progress you make and any tips you find along the way.
