Everyday Essential Oil Hacks

April 29, 2015

These essential oil hacks make using your essential oils daily a breeze!

Hi friends!  I hope everyone made it to Wednesday safe and sound.  It’s been a crazy week for us with lots of babies making their entrance to the world!  I’m loving it!

I’ve shared my love of essential oils with you all before, but I can’t say enough how much they have changed our life in such a positive way.  They have made our lives happier and to be honest, easier.  I now know how to better care for myself and my family in a more natural way, and I love that!

I thought it would be fun to share some essential oil hacks with you, so you get an idea of how diverse they really are. These hacks are using only the 10 oils in the everyday oils collection.  10 oils and so many possibilities.

Love essential oils but not sure how to use them? These hacks are easy ways to incorporate them into your everyday life.

The house smells terrible.
Purification and Thieves are my favorite oils to use to cleanse the air.  Diffuse 4 drops Thieves and 5 drops Purification to expel odors and purify the air (kills airborne and odor causing germs). Add 5 drops lavender, Thieves or Purification essential oils, a pinch of sea salt and distilled water to a spritz bottle. Spray anywhere you smell an odor.

Chemical-free laundry.
Add a few drops of your favorite essential oil to a damp wash cloth (I like lavender) and toss it in the dryer.  You come out with fresh smelling laundry without the chemical-filled dryer sheets.  You could also add a few drops of lavender to a dryer ball as well!

Can’t get out of bed in the morning.
Diffuse 5-6 drops of peppermint in the morning, or add 1 drop to your shower.  The minty aroma will wake you right up! 1 drop of peppermint applied to the temples or back of the neck is also a refreshing wake up call (and great for headaches).

We love our sleep.
Rub 1-2 drops of lavender on the bottoms of feet before bedtime, or sprinkle 1-2 drops on your pillow before you lay down. You can also diffuse lavender before bed (we diffuse lavender in my daughter’s room).  (We also love to diffuse cedarwood essential oil for both kids and adults.)

My dishwasher could use some freshening up.
Add 2 drops of lemon essential oil to dishwasher before you run it for a spot-free rinse, or add 1 drop of Purification to a musty dishwasher before you load and run.

Breakouts be gone.
Take 1-2 drops of tea tree or Purification essential oil and place directly on the spot (I use a Q-tip for this, but you can use your fingers as well).

Germs, germs go away.
Make a Thieves hand sanitizer and carry it in your purse.  In a 1 ounce bottle mix 1 tablespoon Aloe Vera gel, 1/8 teaspoon Vitamin E oil (if you have it) and 2-3 drops Thieves.  Shake and add a small amount of water to thin it out to easily squirt in hands.

Chemical-free house cleaner.
Mix 8-10 drops Thieves or lemon essential oil (use glass bottle for lemon) with 8 ounces purified water. You can clean and sanitize any surface in your home, including mirrors and toilets.  You could also make a homemade soft scrub by combining 1 1/2 cups baking soda, 1/2 cup unscented castile soap, 2 tablespoons water, 2 tablespoons white vinegar and 10 drops lemon essential oil in a 16 ounce jar.

I like to be joyous!
Rub 1 drop of Joy over your heart, or diffuse Joy and lemon to keep that smile on your face.

Keeping my respiratory system happy and healthy.
Combine 5 drops lemon, lavender and peppermint essential oils in a roller bottle and roll on throat, neck, behind ears and on forehead.  You can also diffuse 2 drops of each oil.

I want to keep my family healthy all year long.
For kids, combine 2 drops of Thieves essential oil with 1 teaspoon coconut or grapeseed oil and apply to bottoms of feet and spine every 1-2 hours.  For adults, apply 1 drop of Thieves to bottoms of feet and spine every 1-2 hours to boost immunity.  Make Thieves tea by mixing 1 drop Thieves, 1 drop lemon, 1 drop peppermint & honey to taste in warm water.

My carpet needs freshening.
Combine 1 cup baking soda with 10 drops Purification and 5 drops Thieves essential oils.  Let set for 20 minutes. Sprinkle on the carpet before you vacuum for a clean carpet smell.

I’m keeping my digestive system happy and healthy.
Add 1 drop of lemon essential oil to a glass of water.  Drink 2 glasses of lemon water a day to help keep toxins out of your system.

I just got done lifting weights, running or hauling kiddos around.
Mix 5 drops PanAway, 5 drops peppermint and 5 drops Frankincense essential oils with 1/4 cup coconut oil (add 5 drops Valor if you have it).  Apply to muscles including back, thighs, and knees.

I want to keep my skin healthy.
Apply 1 drop of lavender to skin where needed.  For kids, combine 3-5 drops of lavender with 1 teaspoon coconut or grapeseed oil.  Spread on skin.

Keep the smelly bathroom fresh at all times.
Add 1-2 drops of Thieves or Purification essential oil to a cotton ball and place behind toilet bowl, inside garbage can, or inside your toilet paper roll for an as you roll scent release.

Microwave is covered in gunk and food.
Add 1 cup of water, 1/4 cup white vinegar and 2 -3 drops Thieves, lemon or Purification essential oil to a microwave safe bowl. Microwave for 5 minutes, then wipe down with a damp paper towel or wash cloth.  For an extra dirty microwave, let bowl stand in microwave 2 minutes after timer has gone off.

Sticky residue off the floors.
Place 1-2 drops of lemon essential oil on a paper towel or wash cloth, scrub and the sticky residue is gone!  Works on hard surfaces and carpet.  Gets gum off the bottom of your shoes as well.

There are endless possibilities with essential oils.  It’s amazing what 1 drop can do. I often get asked how many drops are in a bottle. A 5 ml bottle has about 100 drops and 15 ml bottle has 300 drops, so you can see how a bottle can last you a long time when you’re only using 1 or 2 drops.  I’m so thankful that I started my journey with essential oils to provide my family with health and happiness.  It gives me peace of mind to know that there are natural products right at our fingertips, and that we have a choice as to how we treat ourselves and our home.

I’m all about the we can’t sleep hack!! I don’t have the essential oils for this, but I’ve used the lavender trick and it really does work! xo, Biana – BlovedBoston

Looks like I need to be using my lemon oil for more than it’s smell. 🙂

Love love love this! VERY great ideas, Tiffany! I love my Purification for pimples. It really does help them to go away quickly. I really need to try the microwave one!

Tea tree oil CLEARED my skin completely! I was using harsh chemicals and getting no where, and then my sister talked me into trying the oil and it was a miracle. Yes to all the other “hacks” too – especially lavender on the pillow case!

Great tips Tiffany! I personally love the chemical-free laundry tip! I make my own detergent and I always add some essential oils to it but it’s such a faint scent. I might try your tip instead and leave the oil out of the detergent.

Oh and sticky residue off of floors?! How did you know my 3-year-old loves to put stickers everywhere?! lol

I didn’t know about lavender on bruises and scrapes either. Awesome!

    Thanks for sharing.

    Wishing you a lovely day.
    xoxo

Purification is absolutely one of my favorites! I tell people all the time it rids the house of even the worse dirty diaper smells. The entire Thieves line is amazing. Not much works right now to help my kids settle down and go to sleep (including Lavender, Vetiver, Dream Catcher, Peace and Calming or Tranquil) – but I’m truly hopeful that has more to do with our transitional phase. Great post, pinning it!

I have tried the JOY in the diffuser. Yes, so far, it is my favorite scent. I just want to breathe it in every time it releases its mist. I bookmarked this and I refer back to it just about every other day. This morning my husband got bit by something and I used the purification oil on it. He isn’t completely sold yet, but I think it is because he doesn’t want to agree that I could be right!!!!

That’s great Michelle! So glad you’re liking the oils! And my hubby was skeptical at first as well, but he’s 100% sold now. It just takes men a bit more time usually. 🙂

  • “A perfect marriage is just two imperfect people who refuse to give up on each other.” 💑 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
We are so flawed. Both of us. We get on each other’s nerves. We pick at little things. We even disagree on big things sometimes. But even when I’m exhausted and frustrated, there’s no one I’d rather wake up next to than this guy. We spend 24 hours a day, every day together, and I still get sad when he has to travel for work. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
We are truly a team and work each day to build an amazing life and future for our family. It’s a crazy journey, and one I wouldn’t change for anything. Marriage is work y’all, but so worth it. ❤️
  • A few weeks ago my girl worked out with me and it was amazing. 💪🏼 She wanted to lift and learn the machines and we had the best time. I love that she enjoys exercise. ❤️ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
On another note, we leave Palm Springs for Seattle on Saturday and I am so looking forward to spending time with friends and family this holiday season. 😍 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Do you travel for the holidays? 🎄
  • {#ad} Finding ways to stay fit in the road has been one of my missions the last 6 months. Add in kids constantly needing your attention and my workouts sometimes get cut short. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
One of my new favorite things to use is Jazzercise’s On Demand program! 😍 All the conveniences of fun Jazzercise classes wherever you want to be! Plus they have a variety of class durations you accommodate your busy schedule. 🙌🏻 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

  • Not gonna lie, Joshua Tree National Park was pretty damn awesome. Dry AF, but those trees are 😍.
  • Typical morning with these three. 🥰 Mornings are my absolute favorite time with them. My second favorite is bedtime. #justkiddingsortof ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Our mornings are much slower now that we homeschool. It’s not at all easy. It’s actually harder than I imagined it would be. But I love that we can go at our own pace, take breaks during the day for adventures, and use all sorts of awesome tools for learning. We can change things when we want and I can teach to my child’s likes and abilities. I always thought I would send them back to school when our travels are over, but now I’m not so sure. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Have you ever considered homeschooling, or do you? What are your thoughts on the subject?
  • Throwback to our Hawaii trip. We talked about spending a month there this winter. I wouldn’t be mad at that idea. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Are you a lover of the heat or colder weather? I usually prefer the colder temps, because they mean snow. But we have spent a lot of time in the mountains so I’m soaking up all the time we’re getting in Palm Springs.
  • My body has been greatly confused by the 90 degrees in November weather. 😂 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
This guy y’all. 🥰 He is spicy and has a newfound obsession with Star Wars. He is snuggly for an hour in the morning, and independent the rest of the day. I never knew a child could be as busy as he is. He’s definitely testing boundaries these days, but when he does something wrong he says “I’m sorry” in the sweetest voice and damn it is hard to stay mad at that. ❤️
  • I almost wasn’t going to post this photo for 2 reasons.
1️⃣ Because it’s not a great picture.
2️⃣ Because you can see my cellulite when you zoom in. But I decided to share for that exact reason. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ We all struggle with insecurities. Even at the best shape of my life I still had things that bothered me about my body. But y’all, these insecurities do not define us! They don’t make us any less of a wife, mom, sister, daughter, or friend. People love you because you are kind and loving and funny and a good person! No one gives a shit about the cellulite on your thighs except you. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ We need to stop defining our worth based on how we look. We are all different and those differences make this world such an amazing and unique place.
