“Honey, let’s paint the deck.” Part 1

August 15, 2013

Yes, that’s how it all started.  “We really should paint the deck.”  I was right ya know.  It really did need to be painted.  We’d neglected it for a year too long and now the paint is chipping and it just looks plain old bad.  Plus it was a terrible color.  It didn’t go with the house at all and I was sick of it.

So we got the paint, the deck wash, the brush to get any excess paint up.  And Huebie started pressure washing.

And then it all went down hill from there……

Here’s what the deck looked like after the pressure washing, when all we thought we had to do was sand and paint.

And here’s where we are now…

Oh yes.  We found a few boards that were starting to rot.  And then a few more.  And then a few more.  So we decided while we were at it, some of the planter boxes were looking a little ragged, so why not take out the bench and planter boxes too.  They took up so much room on the deck and we want more space out there.

Bye bye bench.

But I don’t think we expected this when we took out the planter boxes.

What the heck?  So we started removing more boards.  If I’m gonna do this much to the deck, I’m gonna do it right and have all equal length boards.

So this is where we are today.  Oh yes, the steps had some rot as well.  And the large planter on the right was about to go any day so I’m glad we got rid of it.

Oh, and there was 1 more planter next to the house (behind where I’m standing taking the above picture).

Yep, that’s where it used to be.  Smart builder folks put it right up against the house, so when the house was painted that section was missed.  So let’s add painting the house to this project as well.  Do we still have this paint color in the garage?  I pray we do because I haven’t gone to look yet.  I’m too scared to.  Please Lord let there be this color out there.

We’re starting on cleaning the deck again today to get more of the old paint off then hopefully we’ll start installing the new boards tonight.

I’ll have the full project up next week (let’s hope).

Here’s to a happy Thursday!

Girl, if you think something needs to be done I say do it now. We learned the hard way and waited a year too long and it has turned into quite the little (big) project.

      Good luck!
      XOXO
