It has been a few weeks since I’ve done a Tiff’s Favorites post. Mostly because I was trying to think of other interesting things about myself I could share…and that you’d want to know.
One thing I am deeply passionate about is music. I really think I missed my calling in music. Not necesarily as a singer (more on that later) but in the industry; as a producer, in marketing, etc. I feel like I’ve got the music in me (name that band, anyone?) and music has alway been a huge part of my life.
I come from a very musical family. My grandpa was a bluegrass musician. My grandma plays piano and is a wonderful singer. My uncle has been in a few different bands, one that was pretty big, and plays multiple instruments. My little brother was talented in so many ways. He was a singer and songwriter. And my mom is a phenominal singer. Her voice is powerful and I’ve always been envious of her. I, unfortunately, take after my dad in that I have no voice. Well, I mean I do, it’s just not a very good one. But that doesn’t stop me from belting out every song I hear. 🙂 I did play a few instruments growing up and really wish I’d stuck with them.
One thing about me and music is that I can hear a song one time and remember it. Forever. Huebie always says I should have been on that show where they finish the song lyrics, (you know, the one hosted by Wayne Brady?), because he’s always amazed by what songs I know and remember. I was lucky growing up in that I was raised around multiple genres of music. Classic rock, country, bluegrass, classical, etc. My family listened to it all and it has influenced what I surround myself with today.
I’m going to try to narrow this down to my top 5or so bands/artists. Or this could end up being a 10 page post. (Man, this is going to be tough.)
My #1 favorite band of all time is:
If you listen to Heart then you know why. I think Ann Wilson’s voice is one of the most amazing voices of our time. Her range if fantastic and that rasp she gets is just….fabulous. And let’s not discredit Nancy. She’s the softer side of Heart I think and that woman can wail on the guitar. And I may have a slight female crush on her. 🙂 They are one of those bands that sound as amazing live as they do on their albums. They are also from the Seattle area which makes me love them even more. There really isn’t much else I can say about Heart other than I heart them (#i’msopunny).
Let’s continue with the classic rock shall we? In a close 2nd to Heart is:
Fleetwood Mac. Stevie, Mick, Lindsey, John, Christine. Their sound, their soul, their….everything. I love every single song that Fleetwood Mac has ever released. They are iconic. And you can’t mistake Stevie’s voice. I think I have a thing for raspy female vocalists.
What can I say. I’m a classic rock girl at heart and nothing gets more classic than Led Zeppelin. This is really want I grew up on more than anything. My mom would belt it out like Robert Plant in our family room on most weekend nights. And John on the drums. That man was amazing.
Everyone knows Angus Young. I mean, how can you not? A short little man (seriously you guys, he’s like 5’3″) with long hair wearing a school boy outfit and page boy cap. Always doing his lip thing. And stripping on stage. I love AC/DC. They are just good old rock and roll. (P.S. If you don’t know who Angus Young is, Google him. You’ll know once you see his picture.)
And come on, who doesn’t love:
I mean this is just a given. The Beatles define my middle school years. You can’t mistake a Beatles song.
Yikes! That’s 5 classic rock artists alone! I better narrow this list down a bit more!
Ok, I’m going to stop there and move on to Country music. My other love. Man, this category is even harder for me to narrow down!
Let’s start with the man.
Johnny Cash. Man in Black. A Boy Named Sue. I Walk The Line. Folsom Prison Blues. Nuf said.
Brad Paisley is just a class act. The guy puts out hit after hit and to me, he is true country. You’ll never hear one of his songs on a Top 40s station (ahem, Taylor Swift).
And Jason Aldean. Love him. Just saw him in concert and he really puts on a show.
And yes, my girl Carrie. I honestly can’t think of too many country artists who have her ability and talent. I mean yes, there are some fantastic singers (and I love a lot of them), but her range and power are just amazing. And she’s gorgeous to say the least.
Now, let’s chat about some of my more…eclectic tastes in music.
Tool. You either love them or you hate them. They’re that kind of band. I happen to love them. I love their hard core rock/metal sound.
David Bowie. Probably one of the most innovative artists of our time. I don’t know a rock artist who doesn’t name David Bowie as one of their influences. He has a unique sound that I adore.
And finally:
Did I totally throw you for a loop with this one? Huebie used to give me a hard time about loving Prince. He didn’t understand why. He didn’t know Prince like I know him. Prince writes, composes and produces almost all of his music and plays almost every instrument on his albums. He’s a musical genius. He is also one of the greatest guitar players of our time. And his vocal range…man, that boy can hit the high notes. And I swear to God the man never ages! He is at times flamboyant and controversial, but he is also phenomenal. He’s funk, he’s pop, he’s rock, he’s….Prince.
So now you know the kind of music I listen to often. There is so much more to this list you guys, you don’t even know. I just love music. Not much makes me happier in the world.
Do you like any of my favorites? Anyone else out there like Prince as much as I do? I know there’s gotta be at least one person. 🙂
