{DIY} Children’s Table and Chairs

July 16, 2013

Wow that took way longer than I expected.  I am so happy to finally be able to show you the children’s table and chairs I refinished for baby A!

I gave you a preview of this table and chairs from my childhood last week HERE, when I realized this project would take longer than I thought.  All-in-all it took me about a week (spread over 2ish weeks) to complete this table and chairs.  Mostly because it took so many coats to cover the table top and chairs.  But I’m so happy with how it turned out!

This is the perfect little girl table.  To start this project, I first used 150 grit sand paper to sand the wood prior to priming.  I wanted to make sure I removed any rough patches.  I used a regular wall primer that we had on hand at the house to prime all 3 pieces.  I only did 1 coat because it took quite a while with all the corners and hard to reach places on the chairs.  Looking back, if I’d done 2 coats it may not have taken as many coats of spray paint to get the color I was looking for.

It took only 2 coats on the legs of the table, but about 4 on the table top to get an even color.  The chairs took about 4 or 5 light coats to get full coverage.

I chose spray paint to get even coverage without any streaks.  I really like how you can control the color saturation with spray paint.  The color is Krylon Catalina in a satin finish, which I got at Hobby Lobby.  I also did a clear polyurtehane spray coat in satin to protect the paint and wood.

And Baby A already loves it too!
I think this table will last her quite a few years.

What to you think?  Do you love the color as much as I do?

This set turned out so pretty! It’s awesome that your daughter is using the very same table and chairs you used. You’re lucky that your parents kept them! Thanks so much for sharing them at our Get Your DIY on Fall Party Challenge! This Sunday at 7:00 pm EST starts our new theme, chalkboard projects. I hope you can join us again! 🙂

Thanks so much! It was fun to do. And my daughter loves having her own little space to do her projects. 🙂
